CELTA courses at IH Riviera Maya

About the course

CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) is the best known teacher training course for English language teachers in the world.

The CELTA course provides initial training leading to a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults, probably the best choice available for an initial ELT (or TEFL/TESOL) qualification. It is intended for those with little or no previous English Language teaching experience and for teachers with some experience but little previous training.

Completing the course successfully will enable you to obtain your first teaching position: the course is highly regarded by employers as providing sound initial training and a strong basis from which you can develop further as a teacher of English.

Assessment and certificates

Trainees are continuously assessed in all the syllabus areas, including written assignments, and with particular emphasis on their teaching ability.

At the end of the course successful candidates receive the Cambridge Certificate and a Progress Report.

The CELTA course in Playa del Carmen was intense but one of my better life decisions. The school is mega-friendly, the town a paradise for chilling out when work stops

Course design

Courses are full-time over four weeks and have a minimum of 120 contact hours, plus a further 80 hours plus for required outside of classtime tasks, including assignments and lesson planning.

The course is very intensive and requires a full-time commitment. Full attendance is very important.

We also offer an extensive course, over 15-18 weeks, Saturdays only.

Two things that make this an outstanding course

1. Your course tutors

Belen has worked at IH Riviera Maya since 2013, having previously taught in different schools in Argentina and Mexico.

She has been Director of Studies, and since 2015, a Local Tutor for Cambridge CELTA and CAM courses at IHRM and IH Cancun. She is also an examiner for the Cambridge English exams and is in charge of in-service training for the school's English teaching staff. As a keen conference goer, she keeps up to date with the latest developments in ELT in order to pass them on to her trainees.

Outside the classroom, she enjoys relaxing on the beautiful beaches of the Riviera Maya.

MirandaMiranda has over ten years English language teaching experience. She began her teaching career in Colombia after completing the CELTA and CELTYL, and taught everything from beginners to advanced levels, from young learners to exam preparation classes. She was also involved in a number of projects such as designing courses for adult and young learner programmes, and doing cultural talks at local schools.

After completing her DELTA, Miranda worked in Morocco, teaching business English to university students. Over the years, she has become more and more involved in teacher training and in 2015 moved to Mexico City to join International House. As well as working as a CELTA tutor, she also trains on ICELT and CAM courses. She continues to teach English here in Mexico and works as an IELTS speaking and writing examiner too.

2. Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen

There are CELTA centres around the world but not too many where you can chill out at the end of the day in a setting like this one.

A CELTA course involves four quite intense weeks of work. One thing most trainees seem to agree is that, while it's important to be fully committed to your course, it's also necessary to find time to relax...

Which is one reason why Playa del Carmen is a great choice for a CELTA course.

Was it worth it?

The CELTA course at IH Riveria Maya was one of the most rewarding things I have done. I went in having no idea how to teach English and came out feeling ready to teach my own class
